PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

PRP comes from your blood. After a simple blood draw, Dr. Chavez uses specialized techniques to separate and process your plasma. With these advanced processing techniques, your plasma has five times the normal amount of platelets. Because your platelets have tremendous healing powers, your PRP is a supercharged recovery concentrate.

Dr. Chavez injects the PRP, which activates your platelets to trigger growth factor release. Your growth factors, including ILGF-1, ILGF-2, IL-8, TGF-β, and cytokines, launch and accelerate the recovery process. This includes tissue repair, boosted collagen production in your dermal skin layer, and new blood vessel creation.

Essentially, PRP has the power to return your skin and its underlying support structures to their former condition. The advanced PRP procedures capture your body's peak healing powers and dramatically concentrate them to help you regain firmer, tighter, smoother, and younger-looking skin.

How does PRP treatment work?

After your blood draw, Dr. Chavez prepares your PRP on-site using specialized techniques. Within a short period, you're ready to start treatment.

The next step depends on your personal skin concerns and what your treatment goals are. Usually, PRP works best as a combination treatment with either DermaPen® or fractional CO2 skin resurfacing.

DermaPen

DermaPen creates a series of small punctures, or microchannels, in your skin. The needles are exactly long enough to reach your dermis, the middle skin layer where you make collagen. Because the DermaPen makes controlled microinjuries in your skin, it invokes a healing response that includes fresh collagen growth.

By delivering PRP into the microchannels during treatment, you get even faster results. The PRP boosts your recovery rate and makes the DermaPen treatment even more effective, much faster than it would otherwise be.

Fractional CO2 resurfacing

Fractional CO2 resurfacing selectively removes tiny columns of skin, going down to the dermis. This reveals fresh skin while also stimulating new collagen growth. When added to the skin columns, PRP tunnels right to the dermis and accelerates collagen growth and healing.

Dr. Chavez can help you decide which approach is right for you. Both approaches take an hour or less.

How do I prepare for PRP treatment?

Before your treatment, Dr. Chavez assesses your candidacy and tells you how to prepare. This generally includes avoiding anti-inflammatory medication for 48 hours before the treatment.

If you have corticosteroid injections, you must wait at least a month before having PRP treatment. If you take oral corticosteroids, you must wait at least two weeks before your PRP treatment.

Some conditions, like cancer, low hemoglobin, or low blood platelets, may exclude you from PRP treatment. But most patients who want a more youthful look are a great fit for PRP therapy.
